Happy Birthday Letter to My Four Year-Old

8.11.2012

Dear Lewie,

Where has the time gone?  I just finished reading my letter to you last year, and while you still have that same little three year-old personality, you've, nonetheless, matured and learned so much in just 12 short months.  This year, Mommy and Daddy have really had to "let go" of our baby boy, for the Binky, diapers, and your crib have disappeared.  You are fully potty trained, preferring to use the "grown-up" toilet to your potty chair, you go to sleep in your "big-boy" bed, and the Binky is all but a distant memory.   Your car seat is about to turn into a booster seat, and you're quickly growing out of your 5T clothing.  Before long, I will have to say goodbye to the toddler section of the store for good and embrace the boy's section (gulp).  Do I want to be at this point right now?  My heart is torn.  Part of me is so proud of the little man you're becoming, and part of me yearns for the baby days when I tickled you in your crib, nursed you in the mornings, and yes, even changed your diapers.

You're a regular preschooler now.  You love numbers and letters, and you love to learn.  You also love playing with your friends at school and coming home with interesting jokes (mostly potty-humor) that you've no doubt learned from them.  Just the other day you told me, "You can talk to my butt."  I didn't know whether to burst out laughing or scold you.  It was one of those moments when I scratched my head and thought, now where did that come from?

My little boy in his big-boy bed.  (We still love the Boppy.)

You and Daddy in your new pool.

Showing off your medal at your "Moving Up Party" in Preschool.

This year I'm going to put a new spin on my letter.  Last year, I gave you a list of the top ten things I love about you and your age.  In many cases, those ten reasons still very much apply now, so instead, I'm going to provide a list of the top ten occupations I can see you having when you grow up.  (It will be interesting to see if any of mommy's predictions come true...)

1.  Meteorologist (Weather Forecaster)
You have a keen love for the weather and maps.  Sometimes in the morning you will ask that we turn on the news to watch the weather; other times, you're interested in giving me your own predictions.  "It's going to storm hard, Mommy.  Trees are going to come down."  (Well, I hope not, but after several bad storms this year where trees actually did come down in our yard, I can certainly understand your "futurecast.")  You love the sun, the moon, and the clouds, and you talk a lot about wanting to watch the sun rise or the sun set.   Your favorite book is called The Seasons, and you ask us (especially Gramy) to read it to you again and again.

2.  Elevator Repairman
Okay.  Your fascination with elevators has not gone away.  In fact, I believe it's become stronger.  You request visits to the mall just so we can ride the elevator, and when we pass by large cities in the car, you point to tall buildings asking if we can stop and see their elevators.  You're smart; you know that tall buildings MUST have elevators.  The sliding doors to our bookcase and bedroom closet continue to serve as your "make-believe" elevators too.

3.  Mechanical Engineer
If I were to predict your three Holland Code traits, one of them would be Realistic (this means you like to fix or make things with your hands).   You ALWAYS have very busy hands.  Wherever we go, you cannot let a button go unpressed or a door go unopened.  Furthermore, you love to figure out how things work.  If you're not asking Mommy and Daddy to show you how something works, then you're taking it apart and/or studying it very carefully to understand the "cause/effect" on its own.

4.  Stand-up Comedian
You love making people laugh.  (That's the "Social" part of the Holland Code in you.)  As early as age two, you were trying to figure out knock knock jokes, so you could begin your stand-up comedy routine.  Now, you've increased your repertoire with fart and poopy jokes.  If you're not calling someone a "poopy head," then you're making the actual sound effects instead.  At times, your silliness is downright hilarious, but at other times, you don't know how to stop yourself.  While you'd like to be silly and crack jokes all day long, you are slowly learning that there are times when you have to be more serious too, especially around people that find potty humor to be offensive.

5.  Actor
While I can see you doing a stand-up routine for an audience in the future (heck, you're able to elicit an audience now), I can also see you take on a dramatic role in a soap opera or an on-stage performance too.  Whether you're happy, sad, angry, or bored, you always manage to show your emotions in an "over-the-top" sort of way.  Just today, you were very upset to learn that both Mommy and Daddy were going to the store without you.  You ran away from Gramy in the yard, ran up to the driveway, and then purposely made a flying leap to the ground for dramatic effect.  "Mommy, Daddy, don't leave me," you whaled.  "I want you to stay here with me." You sobbed and sobbed while burying your little face into the ground.  (I'm amazed at how you can turn a mundane event into a Shakespearean tragedy.)

6.  Politician
I suppose a stand-up comedian, actor, and politician all go hand-in-hand these days.  I'd personally rather that you stay away from any of these three professions, but I can't deny your ability to be diplomatic and to know how to handle yourself in certain public situations.  Even more, you usually know how to act in front of certain audiences.  For elderly people, you blink your eyes a little more, act adorable, and sing sweet songs like "I'm a little teapot" or "Twinkle, Twinkle."  For older kids and teens, you act boyishly cool and confident using phrases like "Cool Dude" or "Oh Man."  You've recently learned a few other "more colorful" words in our language too, but since you've been taught not to say them, you remind us that they're "bad words" when we mistakenly say them, too.

7.   Telephone Operator or Telephone Salesperson
In the future, I can see AT&T, Verizon Wireless, or T-Mobile all fighting over you.  Maybe they'd want to hire you to be their 411 operator or maybe they'd offer you a sweet deal to sell their cell phones, tablets, and computers.  The truth of the matter is that if you're not pretending to be on an elevator then you're pretending to talk to people on the phone.  (Lately a lot of these conversations have been with your "make-believe" sister.  Are you going to be a clairvoyant too?)  With all the phone experience you've been getting in these past few years, at age four, you already have the skill set and passion to work for any phone company.

8.  Lifeguard
Daddy came up with this one, and he's right!  Since you've been reintroduced to the pool this summer, we can't ever get you out!  You can spend hour upon hour swimming, kicking, and jumping in.  In fact, you've become so brave, now you're jumping in without anyone's help.  In a few more years, it may be Little Lewie to the rescue!

9.  Landscaper
This is another one of Daddy's predictions.  Every time Daddy goes to cut the lawn, you're out there with him as his trusty sidekick.  Most of the time, you're begging Daddy to take you for a ride on the lawn tractor.  Other times, you grab you little pretend lawnmower and begin pushing it around all over the place.  Lately, you've developed this huge interest in rocks, sticks, and leaves too.  If you're not collecting and putting all these things into your little pockets, then you're proudly giving them to me as gifts.  "Here Mommy.  I have a leaf for you."  (Mommy, of course, would prefer a flower, but for now, I'm happy getting rocks, sticks, and leaves as presents.)

10.  Chef
You love helping Mommy out in the kitchen.  We make cookies, cupcakes, and smoothies together.  We don't have a play kitchen at home, but surprisingly, when we go to other people's houses, you love playing with theirs.  You pretend to serve me hotdogs, pancakes, or yummy desserts.  Since you love to keep your hands busy, cooking seems to be the perfect hobby;  afterall, you get to press buttons too, whether it's setting the timer on the stove or pressing the "liquify" button on the blender.

Bonus:  Photographer
You love taking pictures.  I'm not sure if this is an inate passion or an interest because you see Mommy take a lot of pictures, but this is now the second year that you've requested a camera for a birthday present.  Last year you received a Fisher-Price camera, but the picture quality isn't good enough for you.  You're still requesting the real deal.

It's fun watching you grow up Lewie.  In time, some of these little interests will fade away, but others may stay around for good.  One thing I know for sure is that you're a very social little boy who loves routine and loves to fix or maneuver things with your hands.  (A career counselor would label you Social, Realistic, and Conventional.)  Now that the three year-old chapter has ended, it'll be exciting to see what the 4's bring!

I love you with all my heart and am very, very proud of you!

Trip to Sesame Street

8.09.2012

"I like Cookie Monster and Elmo and Abby Cadabby and Big Bird too."  That's the comment Little Lewie made at the lunch table on Monday when he had a chance to "dine" with all of his favorite Sesame Street friends.

Going to Sesame Place in Pennsylvania was a very last minute trip, but I'm so glad we went!  For a few days we told Lewie we had a surprise for him.  Even when we woke him up at 5 a.m. on Sunday morning to get into the car, he still had no idea where we were going.  He thought arriving at the hotel (with elevators) was an adventure in itself, but when he arrived at Sesame Place, he was thrilled to see all of his favorite characters up front and in-person.

From the water slides, to the merry-go-round, to the Sesame "Rock Concert," to the Sesame Street Parade, he was smiling from ear to ear.  Although I got sick on Monday with the stomach bug (sigh), it was still a joy to see Lewie so happy in this land of "make believe."  When we returned home Tuesday night, Lewie wanted to watch Elmo's World right away.  He definitely wasn't ready to say "goodbye" to his red, furry, friend.

What does Lewie and Cookie Monster have in common? Yup, their love of cookies!

Long Awaited Family Fun!

7.29.2012

This past weekend we spent a wonderful few days in Delaware visiting family and friends.  It was a long awaited trip because we haven't been able to visit in the past two years, partly because we were concerned about making a five to six hour drive with Little Lewie and partly because my husband's work schedule never seemed to jive with the rest of the family.

This year we made no excuses; we went and had a great time!  On Saturday I had a chance to see my best friend from college and her three adorable children, and the rest of the weekend, we had a chance to visit with my aunts and cousins, who just adored and doted on Little Lewie.  The best part of the trip by far was seeing my little boy's smile from ear to ear.  He couldn't get enough of being the center of attention, and if he wasn't busy entertaining everyone, then he was busy splashing away in the pool.  I think it's only a matter of time before he officially learns how to swim.  He was definitely paddling and kicking like a little fish!

One of my favorite memories of the trip was Lewie's excitement of sleeping in my aunt and uncle's camper.  He was on a "Oh my God" kick, so the minute we entered the camper for the first time, he was constantly telling us about all the features:  "Oh my God, there's a bed in here.  Oh my God there's a stove in here.  Oh my God there's a toilet in here."  Oh, and then comes my favorite comment of them all:  "Mommy, there's a car in here."  He saw the steering wheel and couldn't believe that the camper was basically a house on wheels.  Yes, I tried correcting him on his use of God over and over again.  (My family did too for that matter.) Fortunately, it was just a little phase--he hasn't repeated these words since we've returned back to good ole' CT.

Here are a few of my favorite pictures:

The Wedding...

7.19.2012

My best friend Tracy got married to her best friend this past Saturday.  I had the honor of being one of the bridesmaids, and my little boy had the honor of being the ring bearer.  For months I tried to explain what this responsibility meant, but honestly, what does a three year-old boy know about weddings?

In the weeks leading up to the wedding, we've been crazy busy.  I helped plan Tracy's bachelorette party...a day out at the vineyards...,and the weekend prior to the wedding was Tracy's shower.  Getting my dress, shoes, and Little Lewie's tux was yet another accomplishment.   Since Tracy surprised us with a July wedding (she originally planned it for the fall), there was no room for error.  From the moment I learned about it in early June, it was "go" time!

Now that it's over, I'm a little sad.  The excitement and anticipation leading up to it is one that I still remember when I married my best friend six years ago.  In a way, it was like reliving the excitement all over again.  Most of my friends are already married and have children, so it may be a long while before I'm invited to another wedding like this one.  After it was done, Little Lewie asked, "Mommy, can we go to a wedding again tomorrow?  Okay?  Let's do that!"  Oh my heart broke to tell him that weddings were very special occassions, and it would be a long while until we would be able to go again.

Here are some pictures and "memorable moments" of Tracy's special day:

The first fitting...I was really proud of his good behavior!

Now why can't I get my little boy to stand still?

He passed out in his car seat before he even sat down.
That's proof of one outstanding wedding!

All of us really had a wonderful time, and even though it was a lot of work, it sure did bring a lot of laughs.  Little Lewie ended up developing a mini crush on Sarah, and he literally danced with her the whole night to every song (fast and slow).  Even more, I couldn't believe my little boy had some moves on the dance floor.  At home I've seen him kind of sway from side to side and clap, but at the wedding he was really showing off and stutting his stuff...so much that he developed a little audience of his own; it seemed like almost everyone was watching him from a distance.

In another post, I hope to add some professional pictures of the church ceremony.  All in all, it was definitely a special time for both my friend that deserves a life of happiness and our little family.  Lewie is patiently awaiting our next wedding invitation.  I hope one will come soon!

My Little Actor

7.04.2012

Last weekend, our family took a long awaited trip.  It was only for a few days, but it gave us the peace and calm we needed (away from our daily work schedule) to just enjoy being in the present.  My husband used the days to participate in a sober living retreat, and so I invited my mom to come along so that Lewie could enjoy spending his days both with Mommy and Gramy.

On both Saturday and Sunday, we started our days off feeling refreshed with a healthy breakfast.  After breakfast, we visited a few small gift shops and specialty shops in town, and then we spent our afternoons at the hotel's outdoor swimming pool, where overall, it was pretty quiet other than a few hotel guests taking a dip.  The early morning was a special time for me as I woke up and took a long walk through the countryside while the others were still fast asleep at the hotel.  It gave me time to reflect about the present, the unforseen future, and the past.  It also allowed me to do some soul searching.  Do I want to quit my job and plunge myself into this new start-up business?  If not, I was recently informed that my job would become full-time.  Did I want to keep my current job (something that's secure and stable), especially in an economy like this where I should be thanking my lucky stars that I'm employed?  I can't say any official decisions were made during these walks, but I found a strange sense of calm that God would provide and that an answer will come when the time is right.

Perhaps the most beautiful part of this trip was spending two full days with my little guy without the interruption of work, errands, phone calls, emails, or just plain worries.  I knew Lewie had been going through yet another change--more talkative, more confident, more self-assured, but I didn't know how much he was becomming his own little person.  During our store trips, he was charming, funny, and quite the entertainer.  He'd make store owners laugh, he'd ask intelligent questions, and he'd make friends with everyone that passed by.  At an art gallery that once used to be a bank, he started the following conversation:

"Hi.  I want to tell you something..."
"Who me?" the store owner asked.
"Yes, is this an elevator?" he asked pointing to a unique door.
     "Oh no.  It's a vault."
     "Oh...how does it work?"

The owner got up from the register and showed him the combination lock and the huge mechanical lever.  That, of course, to Lewie, was the start of a new friendship where he continued to fire away questions about the door and tried to figure out how the lever worked.

Another memorable moment was at the Harney and Sons Tea Shop.  While we were waiting to taste several brewed teas, Lewie plopped himself down on one of the benches and proceeded to have a made-up conversation with Daddy on his cell phone.  He was the voice of both himself and Daddy, so we got to hear in detail this two way conversation.  Customers of the tea shop were enthralled by his antics, and since he had an audience, he began to make up other funny conversations with his play phone too.  When any of the customers had to leave before we did, he made sure to use his manners.  "Bye.  See you next time. or See you soon," was the normal farewell.

I could provide so many more examples, but what really surprises me is his ability to take on different personas.  He's sweet and charming for elderly people, cool and funny for teenagers, and a casanova for pretty young girls (anywhere between 14 to 25).  I do have my hands full.  All in all, it was a fun, relaxing, and entertaining weekend.  I'm vowing to have more of them in our future.

Another great picture of them...Their smiles are REAL.

A Dance Recital, a Baptism, and an Anniversary

6.12.2012

Where do I begin?  Last week I lost my Internet service, and it took over a week to get my computer back up and running.  Then, this weekend, we were off to the races.  On Saturday, Lewie had a chance to see his cousin Sarah at her dance recital.  During every dance he kept asking, "Where's Sarah?  Where's Sarah?"  I guess he expected her to be the star of every performance.  I have to admit that for only being five years old, she sure did dance well.  I'm sure it wasn't by accident that she happened to be placed in the front row and center.

On Sunday, we were invited to a baptism.  We "googled" the church ahead of time, and I showed Lewie what it looked like.  Then he helped me use Mapquest to figure out its location.  He was so excited to help us with directions as we drove, and indeed he must have been paying very close attention because he spotted the church from quite a distance (even before us).  "Mommy, there's the church!  There's the church!" he announced happily.   Once we entered, Lewie acted as if we struck gold.  Since it's an old building (probably from the early 1700's), each of the pews had its own little door.  He couldn't get enough of watching the little door open and close again and again, which of course, is an action we had to stop while the mass was being said.

Finally, yesterday marked our six year wedding anniversary.  Although I'm ashamed to admit it, both my husband and me have been so busy with work lately that we almost forgot about it.  Thankfully, my mother didn't, and she not only gave us money to go out and eat but also volunteered  to watch Lewie for us, so we could have a nice, romantic dinner alone.  The date did wonders for our relationship and sense of well being.  What a wonderful surprise!

Yes, these past few days have been a whirlwind, but I don't want to forget them.  Spending a few days with close friends and family is and always will be "priceless."

Exploring the Past (a Vist to my Alma Mater)

4.14.2012

Just yesterday I took my three year-old with me to my old stomping grounds, Sacred Heart University, known to most beloved alums as SHU.  "Whatever made you think about taking Lewie there?" my mom asked after I told her about our little adventure.

"Well, since he loves exploring college campuses (Mommy and Daddy both work at different colleges, and he loves to visit us at work) I figured I'd take him to another one.  Plus, it gave me an opportunity to see all the new buildings they've been touting about over the years..."

My mother may have thought this was a strange decision, but it ended up being a spectacular day!  For one, it gave Lewie a chance to be Lewie and to enjoy all the things that HE loves.  We rode on four different elevators, explored the various nooks and crannies of old and new buildings alike, and waved hello to all the young, excited students in the hallways.  (It was definitely very busy for a Friday afternoon.)

However, then there were the unexpected events that made the day even better.  When visiting their new gym, Lewie showed interest in one of the large coach buses used to shuttle around athletes.  The driver actually let him sit behind the steering wheel and press buttons, like making the door open and close.  Then we had a chance to visit their brand new campus center, the Linda E. McMahon Commons.  Little did we know, that yesterday was the actual dedication ceremony and grand opening of the building.  Lewie had a chance to see their state-of-the-art dining hall, and since everything is brand new and just on display, he was allowed to go inside their "kitchen" area and pretend like he owned his very own restaurant.  "This is my restaurant," he touted as he pretended to work as a busy chef.

Finally, after hours of exploration, Lewie became tired and didn't want to walk back to the car.  "Carry me Mommy," he pleaded.  In days of the past, I would have welcomed his request, but now that he wears a size 5 toddler and weighs over 50 lbs., the thought of carrying him for a half a mile already made my back hurt.  Not even two minutes later, I saw a young student worker driving around on a golf cart.
"Could you give us a ride back to our car?" I begged.
"Sure, no problem," he answered as he shuttled us right to the door of our car.  This of course, was another extra special moment that Lewie couldn't stop talking about.

Yesterday, I'll admit it, was a super day!  It's been 15 years since I walked the SHU campus as a young, bright-eyed college student.  I couldn't help but to smile as I saw all the new young students full of hope, excitement, and dreams.  Their SHU campus is definitely a different experience from mine.   The SHU I knew looked more like a high school compared to the five-star luxury resort they have now.  Maybe one day Lewie will choose to go here too.  Time will only tell.
